On Monday June 28, 2010 HRH Elizabeth II arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia for her present Royal Visit to Canada. On that day she took part in services commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Navy 1910-2010. That day I was reminded of a time twenty years ago when I researched members of the Royal Naval Reserve. Here is a list of Spaniards Bay – Tilton sons, members of the Reserve, as taken from writings and research of ©1990 MRyan tidbits. They include fifteen seamen from Spaniards Bay and three seamen from Tilton. Numbered among those names are: Levi Chipman (1346X), Spaniards Bay (son of Edward Chipman); John F. Collins (2756X), Spaniards Bay (no mention of next of kin); Matthew J. Costello junior (1470X), Spaniards Bay (my “first cousin-thrice removed”); Herbert Drover (937X), Spaniards Bay (nephew of Mrs. Cecily Vokey); Roy Gosse (2086X), Spaniards Bay (son of Martin Gosse); John Higgins (1398X), Spaniards Bay (son of Reuben Higgins); John Hutchings (1049X), Spaniards Bay (spouse of Mrs. Norah Hutchings); Mark Hutchings junior (2078X), Spaniards Bay; Stanley Hutchings (761X), Spaniards Bay (spouse of Mrs. Providence Hutchings); James Jewer (655X), Spaniards Bay (son of Mrs. Jane Jewer); Edward Neil (Reservist number-unknown), Spaniards Bay (son of Mrs. Mary J. Neil); Matthew Ryan (1943X), Spaniards Bay [(son of Thomas Ryan) my “first cousin-four times removed”]; Richard T. Ryan (1290X), Spaniards Bay [(son of John Ryan) Matthew’s nephew]; Moses Smith (2439X), Spaniards Bay ((no mention of next of kin); and John Snow (1399X), Spaniards Bay (son of Mrs. Caroline Snow). Joseph Crane (Reservist number-unknown), Tilton (son of Mrs. Whilomena Crane); Walter Gosse (Reservist number-unknown), Tilton (son of Mrs. Elizabeth Gosse); and Michael Young (1705X), Tilton [(son of Nicholas Young) my “first cousin-once removed]. The above information was compiled into a manuscript written in 1990 by yours truly.

This is the ninty-fourth anniversary of the July Drive, the events of the Newfoundland Regiment during that morning July 1. 1916 has caused the date of July first to be one of extreme saddness. In 1949 when Newfoundland became the tenth province to join Confederation with Canada that same day became a day of "joy". It is the 143rd anniversary of Canada this day. For many Newfoundlanders it is a tall order to observe both because our memories are instilled to recall the sad events of the Newfoundland Regiment being virtually wiped out in 1916. My memories today as I listen to the sounds of my "mainland" neighbours fireworks (of the joyful event 143 years ago) are different! The Sacrifice of Newfoundlanders I recall during “The July Drive” July 1, 1916 at the Battle of the Somme speaks of the Newfoundlanders that left their trenches on July 1, 1916 only 69 returned to answer the roll being called. There were 255 men were killed in action, 386 wounded and there were some 91 of them unaccounted for! The following information is selected from writings and research of ©1990 MRyan tidbits. It lists Spaniards Bay-Tilton sons that were said to be assigned to the British Expeditionary Force prior to the July day. Joseph Crane, Spaniards Bay (nephew of Mary Anne Smith); David Brown, Tilton (no mention of next of kin); Robert Chipman, Spaniards Bay (son of Edward Chipman); Augustus Dawson, Spaniards Bay [(son of Mrs. Margaret Dawson); the “second cousin-once removed of ‘yours truly’”]; Matthew Brazil, Spaniards Bay [(brother of Thomas Brazil junior) my maternal grandfather]; Solomon Gosse, Spaniards Bay (son of Emma Gosse); Walter Murrin, Spaniards Bay (son of William Murrin); Nathan Gosse, Spaniards Bay (son of Evan Gosse); Duncan Collins, Spaniards Bay (son of Robert Collins); and Douglas Gosse, Spaniards Bay (son of Mrs. Jessie Gosse). Thomas Coombs, Spaniards Bay (Henry Coombs’ son) had been captured by German troops at Beaumont-Hamel a couple of days prior on June 28, 1916! He was a Prisoner of War at Gresson, Germany until being released and arriving at Dover (England) in December 1918. There were other Spaniards Bay sons enlisted in the Newfoundland Regiment after the July 1916 battle, but the purpose of this notation to this site is at this time to honour those that were assigned to the B. E. F. prior to June 1916. Joseph Crane Badge No. 736; Thomas Coombs Badge No. 747; David Brown Badge No. 1319; Robert Chipman Badge No. 1320; Augustus Dawson Badge No. 1340; Matthew Brazil Badge 1368; Solomon Gosse Badge No. 1411; Walter Murrin Badge No. 1412; Nathan Gosse Badge No. 1421; Duncan Collins Badge No.1422; and Douglas Gosse Badge No. 1610!
